What Happened to Freedom?

Published by bottomline at 10:36 pm under The Bottom Line Edit This

Today I read that “Miss USA 2009″ contestant Carrie Prejean (Miss California) was asked whether she believed that all states should legalize same-sex marriage. Ms. Prejean responded by saying that in her opinion marriage should be between a man and a woman. Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, who was a “Miss USA 2009″ judge, said that statement cost her the crown.

Now let me say right now that I don’t believe the government should be allowed to tell you who you can or can’t marry, but I also don’t think that the statement made by Ms. Prejean should have cost her the crown. Perez Hilton is saying that Ms. Prejean lost her crown because of what she believes in. Mr. Hilton, isn’t that a little hypocritical?

Perez Hilton fights for the freedom for same sex couples to marry, but doesn’t believe in freedom of speach? I understand that Mr. Hilton did not ask if Ms. Prejean agreed with same sex marriage, but that is the question she actually answered. Never did she say that same sex marriage should be illegal, she just said that she believed marriage should be between a man and a woman. What makes it OK for Perez Hilton to discriminate, but no body else?

The bottom line: I believe that Perez Hilton is fighting a great battle, and it is hard to believe that in the year 2009, the freedoms that each and every person deserves and is entitled to are still being witheld from them. Your rights as a human end where mine begin. Your right to believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman does not negate my right to choose who I wish to marry.

Just remember that a lot of men and women have died fighting for the freedom of every citizen of this country. They did not die fighting for the freedom of some, they died fighting for the freedom of all.
